History In the late 1800's and early part of the 1900's, on Allentown's Hamilton Street, one could find many interesting and unique saloons, hotels, cafes, and shops. The Sterling Hotel is the lone survivor of this grand era in the history of our city. It is in this spirit that we have named our restaurant in the hotel, the Metropole Cafe. The original Metropole Cafe opened in 1904 in the 800 block of Hamilton Street. The proprietor's name was Harvey Haas (Haas means "rabbit" in Pennsylvania Dutch). A tall, white rabbit stood on the sidewalk outside the front door. This large rabbit complemented a huge, white stuffed bear that stood outside the Anewalt Brothers clothing store at 615 Hamilton Street. Other popular places such as the Central Hotel, Columbia House, Black Bear Hotel, and Hotel Allen have since been demolished under the guise of progress. Wednesday Night
